BookWhere 6 for Windows
Internet Online Catalog Search Program
BookWhere is a Windows program that can search thousands of library catalogs
and databases on the Internet. Use a single program to search thousands of online
catalogs, such as the online catalogs of many major universities, the Library
of Congress catalog, government information databases, and online information
services such as OCLC.
BookWhere uses the Z39.50 protocol
to access library catalogs and other
databases on the Internet. Z39.50 lets you access databases several times
faster than using the World Wide Web. With BookWhere you make more
efficient use of your time. Searches continue in the background, while you
are browsing your search results. BookWhere Autosync automatically updates host database
information, so you do not need to keep track of database configuration parameters.
BookWhere is the perfect research assistant for students, professors,
librarians and information professionals.
New Features
- Unicode support: BookWhere searches, displays
and exports MARC records encoded in MARC-8, Latin-1 or UTF-8. This is particularly
important when working with Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, CJK and many other non-Latin
based language materials.
- Connect to more than 2000 databases: Autosync keeps your
system properly configured to connect to new databases and hosts.
- Record scoring and rating: For current maintenance customers
records are automatically assigned a weighted score for quality of MARC record.
- Media type classification: Records are tagged by media type. Cataloguing CDs, DVDs and Videos
is now a breeze!
- Database Selection easier than ever! The new Choose Databases
window featuring keyword filtering to quickly locate a library resource, customize
the display of database attributes to your liking, create groups of databases,
add local database definitions and delete library catalogs from the full list.
- One click Management of Database Groups (Favourites): Right
mouse-click over any Database in the list to instantly add it to one of your
Groups or create a new Group. Double-click on a group name in the Choose Databases
list to expand the group and see member databases. Right mouse click over
a member to remove it from the group. Choose any group to make it a default
for use in new search sessions.
- AutoSync Improvements: With the dramatic increase in the
number of Z39.50 database connection parameters being maintained, an improved
service now delivers updates to the BookWhere client several hundred
times faster. As well database updates are now keyed against a unique internal
record number at WebClarity so AutoSync will not damage Database Groups which
may be defined locally each time a library changes their IP address or Z39.50
port number. There database connection parameters are automatically communicated
to all BookWhere users from the central AutoSync server.
- Adding New Databases and creating groups is even easier!
From the Choose Databases dialog, just right mouse-click and choose New Database.
- Network Test: If you are experiencing disconnected search
sessions and failure to return results from many libraries the problem may
be a firewall on your local network. A simple Network Test command verifies
that your computer has the appropriate network connectivity to send searches
to library servers.
- QuickSearch Toolbar: Easily enter up to two search terms
and your choice of Boolean operator without opening the full search dialog.
- Improved Workflow when Exporting Records: You can define
a default export format and easily append exported records to the same file,
reducing the number of mouse-clicks when exporting records.
- Enhanced Display Rules: BookWhere comes preloaded with
hundreds of display rules. New display rules are available for virtually any
MARC tag and subfield for both the Record List display or exporting records
in tabbed text format.
- Revised Batch Searching: Easily enter a list of up to 50
search keys (such as ISBN numbers).
- Batch Results Window: When carrying out a batch search,
BookWhere now sorts the search keys into two separate lists: matched and unmatched
keys as the search is proceeding.
- Extensive reorganization of File Locations/Windows Registry Settings:
This prepares BookWherefor coming new versions of Windows and makes
it easier to back up a BookWhere installation
- Enhanced Product Activation: Reinstalling the software
on the same computer normally will not require reactivation.
BookWhere is compatible with Windows Vista, XP and 2000.
